26 Plants is live!

We are delighted to be once again partnering with our friends at the Bloomsbury Festival and the Wildlife Trusts on a new project 26 Plants.

Inspired by the 2023 festival’s theme “Grow”, we asked our friends at the Wildlife Trusts to draw up a list of plants for us to focus on.

24 UK-based writers were randomly assigned one of these native plants to grow acquainted with. Whether rare, common, undervalued, or loved, there are reasons for each of the plants to be on the list. Each has a story to tell, unfortunately often about a struggle to survive because of human activity, habitat loss and climate change. In addition, 7 of our international writers in the US and New Zealand were invited to write about a plant in their own country.

Every writer was asked to write a centena (exactly 100 words, of which the first three and last three words must be the same), share a 400-word description of their research journey, and provide an image of their plant.

Explore what they came up with via the Bloomsbury Festival website here.

The 26 Plants project will also form part of 26’s Wordstock event at this year’s festival. Several writers who took part in the project will be sharing their centenas, and perhaps a little insight into their research journey.

Get your ticket here to join us at Wordstock on Saturday 21st October,  2-5:30pm, in the Conway Hall Library.
We’ll also be shining a light on a different plant and writer every day on our Instagram and X/Twitter channels. Do follow along!
