From First Notes to First Edition: The process of publishing a novel

From First Notes to First Edition: The author of Ponti on her journey with her debut novel, how a love letter to Singapore moved from conception to publication and beyond.

Sharlene Teo is a Singaporean writer based in the UK. In 2012 she was awarded the Booker Prize Foundation Scholarship to undertake an MA in Prose Fiction at UEA, and her first novel, Ponti, was published in 2018, winning the inaugural Deborah Rogers Writers’ Award. Praised for the way in which it weaves together three generations across a changing Singapore, and its brutally honest and unglamorous perspective, the novel presents characters open to jealousies, selfishness, and bad luck, and a ‘hot, horrible earth.’

Remarkable … her characters glow with life and humour.” (Ian McEwan).
