Weaving Stories from Life: Researching and inhabiting settings and characters

Weaving Stories from Life: The author of Hideous Kinky, Mr Mac and Me and I Couldn’t Love You More discusses how she researches and creates her vivid settings and characters across her different novels.

A childhood rich in stories, both from her mother’s bedtime tales and from two years spent in North Africa, inspired Esther Freud to move from acting to writing and formed the basis of her first novel, Hideous Kinky. Since then, she has written eight further novels, with her most recent, I Couldn’t Love You More, published last year. It tells the stories of three generations of Irish women as their lives intertwine and overlap. Her 2018 play, Stitchers, focused on the charity, Fine Cell Work. It is her contribution to Threads of Time, a celebration of 25 years of the charity, that connects her to 26.
