Design writer Katie Treggiden, the brain behind award-winning blog Confessions of a Design Geek, talks to Elen Lewis about an exciting 26 project and her Kickstarter campaign to discover new design talent.
What’s your day job?
I am a freelance design journalist and content consultant.
Trying (and largely failing) to bake the perfect sourdough!
What do people get wrong about you?
People often think I’m a designer, which is a huge compliment!
What do you like best about belonging to 26?
The opportunity to get involved in creative writing projects.
How would you describe what you do (in 26 words)
I am obsessed with design and love nothing more than writing about my favourite subject. I am particularly passionate about discovering, championing and inspiring new designers.
What inspired you to launch the 26 Designs project?
I am launching Fiera Magazine to discover new talent at the world’s design fairs. I want to make people feel as if they were there with me and bring the fairs to life in as many ways as possible. Pairing up 26 writers with 26 new designers and asking them to respond creatively to the ultimate expression of design, seemed like a really exciting way to do that.
What’s your own most treasured piece of design?
I am very lucky to have an Olivetti Valentine Typewriter designed by Ettore Sottsass – I had only ever seen it before in design museums and magazine shoots. It is a thing of beauty – and it works!
What are you working on now?
I am working with magCulture’s Jeremy Leslie on the Kickstarter campaign for Fiera Magazine, an independent biannual print magazine that will discover new talent at the world’s design fairs.
Tell us a secret.
Running a Kickstarter campaign is one of the scariest things I’ve ever done!
If you’d like to get involved with the 26 Designs project, email your contact details to email@example.com with ‘26 Designs’ in the subject line by 31 July and we’ll pull names out of a hat.
