Like a less
whimsical Wes Anderson doing Poirot, Knives Out
is a fun whodunnit. Renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found in his
office with his throat slit, and the “last of the
gentlemen detectives” Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig, chewing
the scenery) is brought in to investigate. Which of Thrombey’s dysfunctional family could be the murderer?

The Lost Happy Endings by Ballet Lorent – on tour in 2020
Inspired by an
original story by Carol Ann Duffy, this dance theatre production tells of Jub,
a magical girl who lives in the forest and guards the Happy Endings to stories.
When a wicked witch steals them, Cinderella’s foot no longer fits the
slipper and Goldilocks steals the cottage from the three bears. Bedtime is
broken, children and parents distressed and it’s up to Jub to save the
night-time. Featuring a range of professional dancers and a young community
cast, this is an imaginative, emotional and enchanting production.

A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic
is festive perfection, with a healthy dose of outrage which felt particularly
poignant as I watched it on the eve of the general election… I must admit I
cried, not only at Tiny Tim (of course) but also the cheer joy of indoor snow
and parachuting Brussels sprouts. Yes, really.
