To provide all people

To celebrate the 70th birthday of the National Health Service (NHS)BBC Wales produced an emotional film named ‘To provide all people’. The poetic script weaves together real-life stories of staff and patients punctuated by the historical birth of the NHS. The film is a perfect example of the power of visual storytelling. It turns the organisation’s birthday celebration into something more meaningful. The musical language, beautiful visuals and emotive acting make for a memorable television experience. To provide all people is a must-watch and is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer. I loved it so much I wrote a blog about it.

The bio-pic McQueen is a deeply personal look at the extraordinary life of Lee Alexander McQueen. Through intimate interviews with his closest friends and family, archival footage and home tapes we get an extraordinary insight into how the boy from Stratford quickly rose to become one of the most celebrated British fashion designers. McQueen is a beautiful tragic bio-pic.

Summer reads

The Mill to Monte Carlo by Anne Fletcher. It’s the true story of a working-class man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo in Victorian times. Fascinating story and depiction of the two worlds of Bradford and Monte Carlo in the Victorian age when both places were growing but in very different ways!

Three for the suitcase

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. I’ve heard Arundhati Roy’s second novel is pretty glorious. (And while we’re on Arundhati Roy, have a listen to her Desert Island Discs. It’s brilliant.)

Anything by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I read Americanah early this year and loved it.

And I’d like to return to a childhood favourite, The Wind in the Willows, for some pure escapism

How should a person be?

My most recent read is How Should a Person Be? by Sheila Heti. I know some people say she’s solipsistic but I thought this was brilliant. I’ve also treated myself to a copy of Munich by Robert Harris, just out in paperback – he’s my go-to thriller writer for the beach.
