If you or a young adult reader is looking for a spooky Halloween read, I recommend Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book. It tells the story Nobody “Bod” Owens who is adopted, educated and raised by the occupants of a graveyard. Influenced by the structure of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, each chapter is like a short story – sometimes scary, sometimes comic, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes gruesome with different layers of meaning.

If you enjoy classic novels, and classic scoundrels specifically, then you’ll find this clever young adult fiction an easy escape. 16-year old Mary Porter-Malcolm thinks her Victorian-era book knowledge can help her navigate the world of high school. Read it to find out how that turns out and enjoy her kooky academic family as supporting characters.
