New Zealand-based 26er and pen pal Paul White shares an exciting update on our newly launched project, Dear 26. In fitting correspondence style, of course.
Dear 26 members,
It was a dark and stormy night when it all began and it was bright sunny day when it all came to fruition (well it was here in New Zealand anyway). Dear 26 is no longer an idea it’s a reality – 26 extraordinary letters your favourite book characters might have written to each other.
Twelve writers from New Zealand, and 14 writers from the UK, USA, India, Eire, Northern Ireland, Switzerland, the Czech republic and India have created and crafted a letter from one character a book to another character in a completely different book.
OliveKitteridge (Olive Kitteridge – Elizabeth Strout) has written to Owen Meany (A Prayer for Owen Meany – John Irving); Nelly Dean(Wuthering Heights) has written to DaphneWithers (Owls Do Cry – Janet Frame); Dr Watson(Sherlock Holmes – Conan Doyle) has written to The Whale Man, Ishmael (Moby Dick – Herman Melville), and Zaphod Beeblebrox (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams) has written to Zorro (The Curse of Capistrano – Johnston McCulley).
You can read all the letters here and we’ll be launching a letter a day on Instagram and Twitter.
Meanwhile, we are in touch with three publishers who might make this all into a book, and we’re meeting with the organisers of the Auckland International Writers’ Festival and the Whanganui Literary Festival who are both very keen to feature Dear 26 in their programmes for 2021. And we’ll be having an exhibition of the letters sometime next year in Auckland.
