A festival of words by 26
It’s become as regular as showers in April and blossom in May. Wordstock is back in October, 26’s annual festival of words and writing, and this year it’s more intriguing and more eclectic than ever before. In this year of Shakespeare’s 400th, we’ll go unto the breach of the Free Word Centre in Farringdon on 15 October for a day that celebrates words in all of their joyful potential.
We welcome Victoria Hislop (author of international bestsellers The Island, The Return and The Thread); Vesna Goldsworthy (acclaimed novelist withGorsky and Professor of Creative Writing at UEA); Radio 4’s Alan Dein (prize-winning radio broadcaster) on a panel with Graham Smith (Memories of Fiction project at Roehampton University) to talk about oral histories, listening to people’s stories and the impact of reading on lives.
On the theme of listening, people told us that they wanted workshops that were both fun and useful, and to offer them as choices throughout the day. So we’ve got a stellar line-up of workshop leaders, the strongest in Wordstock’s six-year history, to give insights into subjects that matter to 26’s membership everyday.
International consultant Andy Milligan will run a workshop On Purpose, his best-selling book on branding. Copywriter Simon Prichard will show you how country music can feed your business writing. Then we’ve got Matthew Collins, renowned speaker and voice coach on presenting yourself through the spoken word. Plus Nick Parker, writer and reveller in the absurd in the everyday language; Sarah Gillett will explore who we are online and untangle the myths around digital identity; Martin Clarkson, 26’s chairman, and Melanie Cochran on the art and science of storytelling for business.
All that plus the announcement of the winners of the first ever 26 writing awards; the now legendary book swap; the democratic gathering of new project ideas; and some Shakespearean interventions. And the day will be fuelled by food and drink.
It’s a day that writers of every kind – that’s 26’s membership – will find absorbing, practical and enormously entertaining.
