Earlier this month we had a note from a member sharing a story of a near scam, and how it was prevented by the Society of Authors:
I joined the society a few months ago. Purely by coincidence, a week or so later I was approached by a scammer and they stepped in and sorted it all out for me.
I thought I was dealing with the publishing arm of Daunt Books, but I wasn’t – SoA alerted them too and they put a warning to authors on their website. I got wary before any commitments were made and had the sense to ask SoA’s opinion. They saved me from making an expensive mistake.
I advise all 26ers to join.
It’s not that expensive and covers advice on contracts etc. The scammer almost caught me when I was in a vulnerable state, suffering a chest infection and bereaved after my husband’s death. The fact I had no voice meant I’d had to cancel a call to clinch it with ‘Mason Perez’, who doesn’t exist in the flesh, not in the UK anyway. He said he/his AI avatar was based in Glasgow.
