About me

I’m a freelance writer and editor and a speechwriter with Great Speechwriting. My other business clients include design agencies and an industry regulator, and I also work for think tanks and campaign groups.

I also write and edit copy for the annual Battle of Ideas festival and other events. I have edited two collections of essays, The Changing Role of the Public Intellectual (Routledge, 2005) and Debating Humanism (Imprint Academic, 2006).

In my time, I’ve written everything from TV subtitles (BBC) to a weekly TV column (spiked). I’ve also written two political pamphlets on surveillance, and contributed chapters to books on the knowledge society and offensive football songs (not both at once). I am currently working on a book about, and in defence of, propaganda.

I have a particular interest in India, having been involved with Debating Matters India, a competition for school students, and written several topic guides. I wrote an essay ahead of the 2014 general election, The world’s largest question mark.

I am also a member of the Manifesto Club, which campaigns against the hyperregulation of everyday life. As well as occasional books and think pieces, we produce regular campaign reports, comprising a combination of research findings and argument, with the aim of rethinking and reposing the issues we campaign on. Here is a link to one I wrote in the summer of 2010:
