From the porcelain figure of Mr Nobody With a Drinking Glass to James II’s wedding suit, the V&A has selected an array of treasures from the British Galleries 1500-1760. It’s now up to 26 writers to bring new life to those objects through words. The writers will include members from 26, together with a number of guests, including Andrew Motion and Maura Dooley. The project editors are Rob Self-Pierson, Olivia Sprinkel, Sylvie Saunders and John Simmons.
The brief to the writers: ‘Spend a couple of months getting to know your object, before responding in just 62 words. Think about emotions, connections, images, smells, sights, sounds. Whatever ideas and feelings your treasure conjures up, see where the words take you.’
More than 100 members of 26 applied to take part in this project. Selected randomly, some will write for the V&A exhibition while others are preparing material for the online version. We’ll provide more information as the project unfolds and provide a link to our 26 Treasures website as soon as it’s launched.
